BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Countries affected by both conflict and the climate crisis receive the lowest amounts of climate financing, said Abdullah Balala, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for Energy and Sustainable Development, Trend reports.
Speaking at the high-level panel discussion titled "Climate and Peace: Enabling Joint Action to Leave No One Behind" within the framework of COP29, Balala highlighted examples of progress in building resilient food and water systems, renewable energy sources, advanced social protection mechanisms, and systems for anticipated actions.
“Today, the Baku Call and the Baku Hub give us a clear message that we must continue to work together as one front. The cooperation within the Baku Hub between the presidencies and COP leaders is a noble effort that ensures peace, stability, and the restoration of collaboration in this area. It will remain a central focus in future COPs.
From the UAE's side, we will leverage the Node to drive progress on climate relief, recovery, and peacebuilding initiatives," he added.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium. The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.
The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
