BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Addressing the climate crisis should be a priority for everyone, said Anneliese Dodds, UK Minister for Development, Trend reports.
Speaking at the high-level session "Climate and Peace: Enabling joint action to leave no one behind" at COP29, Dodds emphasized that is exactly the message from Baku.
"I am incredibly proud that the UK is supporting this initiative today. We need everyone to join us in the coming months and begin working together using a more united approach. We know what we can achieve when we collaborate. Our joint efforts have already resulted in Somalia receiving over $100 million in funding from the Green Climate Fund to build resilience.
Beyond Somalia, the UK is working with its partners in Chad, Syria, and Yemen to create vital initiatives and early warning systems that will save lives and establish long-term peace and stability," she added.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
