BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. The Global Matchmaking Platform (GMP) aimed at advancing industrial decarbonization was officially launched at COP29 in Azerbaijan’s Baku, Trend reports.
The platform, supported by initial funding from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Climate Action, was introduced to help connect the needs of developing countries and emerging market economies with global technical and financial support to reduce emissions in energy-intensive and high-emission industrial sectors.
During the launch ceremony, Deputy Director-General and Managing Director of the UN Industrial Development Organization's (UNIDO) Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development Directorate, Ciyong Zou, emphasized that the platform’s success was due to the collective support and collaboration of numerous partners present at the event. He called the GMP a crucial mechanism for fostering cooperation to meet investment, technology transfer, and capacity-building needs.
"The GMP platform has been created as a key cooperation mechanism to meet the needs for investment, technology transfer, and capacity building," Zou said.
Stefan Wenzel, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany, underscored that the GMP will streamline and coordinate decarbonization efforts in the industrial sector.
"We are convinced that the GMP is a key element of our mission to reduce emissions in the industrial sector by 90 percent by 2050, which is essential to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement," he said.
Kasım Gonullu, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology of Türkiye, announced that the country, in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), has prepared a low-carbon roadmap.
"According to these roadmaps, by 2053, we can reduce emissions by 99 percent in the steel industry, by 93 percent in cement, and by 75 percent in aluminum.
Türkiye needs to invest more than $70 billion in building green industries, with over €5 billion in green transformation investments, which will reduce emissions by 20 million tons annually. We believe this project will complement the GMP and create new synergies," he said.
