BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. The growing urgency of the climate problem requires cardinal changes in construction and urban management, Сhairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture Anar Guliyev said at a high-level roundtable on energy efficiency in "green" construction and buildings and climate resilience in cities, Trend reports.

“We must embrace the transformative role that the construction sector can play not only in shaping green building but also in managing sustainable urban development and economic growth,” he said.

Anar Guliyev noted that it should also be recognized that the construction sector is a major contributor to global carbon emissions and environmental degradation.

“As in many other countries around the world, in Azerbaijan, the construction industry has long been a powerful engine of economic development. It has created jobs, modeled innovation, and contributed significantly to improving the quality of life of our citizens. However, this growth comes with a serious responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of these activities. The growing urgency of climate change today requires fundamental changes in how we build and manage our cities. We must adopt greener and more sustainable building practices and prioritize the energy efficiency of buildings.

In this context, I am pleased to announce our ongoing collaboration with the International Finance Corporation to develop a roadmap for green building in Azerbaijan. This roadmap is an important step in integrating sustainable development into our urban planning processes. In addition, the roadmap will provide guidelines for both public and private sector stakeholders to align Azerbaijan's urban planning efforts with global sustainable development goals. As part of our commitment to sustainable development, it also covers digitalization in the construction sector,” he added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) opened on November 11. COP29, which is being held at the Baku Olympic Stadium, will continue until November 22. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date, and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.

The key expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.

A total of 14 initiatives have been put forward by the COP29 Chairmanship.
