BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. The potential for expanding piggyback transport between Georgia and Azerbaijan is being explored, Georgia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili said at a ministerial roundtable on "Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond" at COP29 in Azerbaijan's Baku, Trend reports.
"Piggyback transport between Georgia and Azerbaijan combines the benefits of both rail and road transport, reducing fuel consumption and emissions while also enhancing road safety. The feasibility study is nearing completion and is expected to be finalized early next year," he said.
Davitashvili also highlighted Georgia's active promotion of multimodal hubs and logistics centers that facilitate efficient cargo transfer between different modes of transport and support sustainable supply chains.
"It is important to note that Georgia is a party to several international UN legal instruments concerning transport infrastructure, which demonstrates the country's commitment to international standards. Improving coordination at the international level and harmonizing legal frameworks can significantly enhance regional connectivity by removing physical barriers and improving the compatibility of transport systems," the minister added.
