BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. The number of tourists around the world continues to grow and consequently, emissions in the tourism sector may increase if urgent measures are not taken, the chairperson of the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan Fuad Naghiyev said at the COP29 ministerial meeting on improved climate action in the tourism sector, Trend reports.

He claims that, for the first time ever, COP has thrown a tourism event into the mix of its agenda.

“Today we are at a crossroads. The tourism sector can either continue business as usual or make the transition to a low-carbon and renewable future.

We believe tourism can be part of the solution. “The 'Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism' to be adopted at COP29 will set a clear roadmap for integrating tourism into global climate strategies,” he added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) opened on November 11. COP29, which is being held at the Baku Olympic Stadium, will continue until November 22. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.

The key expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.

A total of 14 initiatives have been put forward by the COP29 Chairmanship.
