BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. The holding of COP29 in Baku is a historic step, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili said at the first ministerial meeting on improved climate action in the tourism sector held in Baku on November 20 within the framework of COP29, Trend reports.

He congratulated Azerbaijan and the world for organizing this important event in Baku.

“For the first time in the history of COP, tourism-related issues have been put on the agenda, which is of great importance for the sector. Therefore, today is a historic day for the tourism industry. I am very pleased that this event took place in Azerbaijan because it is the beginning of a great and important tradition. Climate change and environmental issues also affect tourism and create new challenges in this field,” the UNWTO's Secretary General added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) opened on November 11. COP29, which is being held at the Baku Olympic Stadium, will continue until November 22. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.

The key expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.

A total of 14 initiatives have been put forward by the COP29 Chairmanship.
