BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. ESCAP will continue to support the establishment of sustainable and digital transport corridors, including the Middle Corridor, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said at a high-level roundtable on “Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” at COP29 in Azerbaijan's Baku, Trend reports.
“Green transport corridors require not only the deployment of appropriate technologies but also relevant agreements, including mutual recognition of standards between countries, which will strengthen regional cooperation. Strengthening multimodal operations in the Middle Corridor through harmonization of regulatory frameworks and implementation of digital solutions will ensure greater sustainability of transport systems. ESCAP will continue to support the development of sustainable and digital transport corridors, including the Middle Corridor,” she said.
According to her, building sustainable and digital transport corridors is key to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement by reducing carbon emissions, improving the efficiency of transport and trade flows, utilizing alternative energy sources, and implementing intelligent transport solutions.
“The integration of different modes of transportation that are more sustainable compared to road transport is also of great importance,” Alisjahbana noted.
