BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. Strengthening the sustainability and reliability of the Middle Corridor is a priority for Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Levan Davitashvili said at a high-level roundtable on “Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” at COP29 in Azerbaijan's Baku, Trend reports.
“Our priority is to strengthen the sustainability and reliability of the Middle Corridor, including through infrastructure modernization. I would like to mention two key railway projects in Georgia: the modernization of the main railway line and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line. These projects significantly increase the competitiveness of railway transportation, which is considered one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation,” the minister said.
Davitashvili highlighted that the modernization of the railroad is nearing fruition, poised to amplify its capacity from 27 to an impressive 48 million tons annually, all while enhancing operational efficiency and driving performance metrics.
He believes that the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line really ties the knot for the Middle Corridor, creating a direct link between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye.
“In addition, construction of the east-west highway is actively underway; 70 percent of the sections are already open for traffic. The new roads are designed following European safety standards, and the introduction of intelligent transportation systems will improve their operation,” Davitashvili said.
