BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. Azerbaijan plans to continue its close cooperation with UN Tourism (UNWTO until 2023), Head of the State Tourism Agency's Office Kanan Gasimov told Trend on the sidelines of a press conference within COP29.

"We plan to continue close cooperation with UN Tourism to sign an agreement. Supporting and implementing the agreement requires constant efforts and coordination with UN Tourism and other stakeholders.

This is why we are collaborating with the UN Tourism Committee, aligning our actions to integrate and engage new participants, helping them develop national application processes, and ensuring their involvement in national cooperation programs," he said.

Gasimov added that Azerbaijan, as the host country, is firmly committed to fighting climate change and developing tourism policies.

"We realize that, despite the significant role of tourism in diversifying our economy, it also carries the responsibility of reducing environmental impact. By taking a positive approach to integrating climate measures into the tourism sector and supporting their inclusion in cooperation and development programs, we aim to create a tourism sector that will help achieve our country's goals of carbon neutrality," he emphasized.

To note, Azerbaijan has been a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since September 29, 2001. Azerbaijan has joined UNWT`'s Global Leaders for Tourism campaign and the “One Billion Tourists: One Billion Opportunities” initiative, and UNWTO provided technical assistance in drafting the Law of Azerbaijan on Tourism.
