BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 28. Azerbaijan embraces a moment of stillness as it awaits the municipal election scheduled for tomorrow, Trend reports.
Under the Electoral Code, election campaigning is suspended 24 hours before voting day, and all campaigning activities are prohibited on this day.
Only registered candidates, their authorized representatives, proxies, and registered political parties and party blocs are permitted to engage in pre-election campaigning. The official campaign period began on January 6 and ended today, January 28, at 8:00.
The "silence day" is designed to offer voters a calm and pressure-free environment in which to make their electoral decisions.
It is important to note that tomorrow, polling stations will open at 08:00 and remain open until 19:00. A total of 16,096 candidates in 685 municipalities will participate in the elections.
Scheduled to hold on January 29, this Azerbaijani municipal election will be the first in the country's liberated territories and the sixth overall. The inaugural municipal election in Azerbaijan occurred on December 12, 1999. Consequently, up to 2,660 municipalities (exceeding 21,000 municipal members) were established nationwide. Nineteen members were elected to the largest municipality and five to the smallest municipality.
Municipalities in Azerbaijan are elected for a five-year term. Members of municipalities may be elected by Republic of Azerbaijan citizens who are eligible to vote and permanently reside in the appropriate electoral district.
