BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 29. ITOCHU Corporation has announced the signing of a memorandum of collaboration with Mitsubishi UBE and Australian company MCi Carbon Pty Ltd to explore the development of a production plant in Japan for sustainable industrial materials, Trend reports via ITOCHU.
MCi Carbon owns a mineral carbonation technology that combines CO₂ with waste concrete, steel slag, and minerals like serpentinite, enabling the production of eco-friendly alternatives for various industries. The partnership aims to establish a supply chain for raw material procurement, sales, and commercialization within Japan.
The collaboration is expected to contribute to carbon capture and utilization (CCU) efforts, reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting the reuse of industrial waste, aligning with Japan’s push for a recycling-oriented society.
ITOCHU, which invested in MCi in 2021, has played a key role in supporting the company’s technological advancements. Mitsubishi UBE, one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of industrial materials, has now also invested in MCi, leveraging its expertise in sustainable product development.
The initiative marks a significant step toward decarbonization and circular economy efforts in Japan’s industrial sector.
