A resolution supporting Georgia's accession to NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) at the upcoming summit of the alliance in the UK has been submitted for consideration to the House of Representatives of the US Congress.

The document was presented by Congressmen Ted Poe and William Keating, the Georgian Premier's press service reported on Feb. 27. The congressmen stated this at a meeting with the Georgian PM in Washington.

'Congress considers that the US should demonstrate its leadership in support of Georgia's accession to the Membership Action Plan (MAP) to NATO, Georgia is a reliable ally which has achieved important progress in the sphere of defence, as well as democratic reform and human rights', the document said.

The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs submitted the resolution to the US Congress for further consideration and voting.

NATO member countries considered Tbilisi as not being ready for gaining NATO status membership at the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member countries on 2-3 December 2008 in Brussels, postponing the Action Plan for NATO membership sine die (indefinite term).

Georgia`s initial request for gaining MAP was rejected at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008. Then it was negotiated that the country will become a member of the bloc in the future.
