BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. The global "Green Growth Portal," developed through a collaboration between the Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan and the "Growth Lab" International Development Center at Harvard University, was unveiled in Baku during the ongoing COP29, Trend reports.
Speaking at the presentation, the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan, Mikayil Jabbarov, emphasized the portal’s significance for global cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals.
The initiative, based on fundamental research, will support countries in identifying and capitalizing on the opportunities of green growth. It aims to provide participants in the global energy transition with strategies for implementing green economic transformations.
SOCAR Vice-President Kanan Najafov, spoke about the progress made in decarbonization, energy transition, and the implementation of low-carbon solutions, highlighting that the new portal would play a key role in SOCAR’s energy transformation.
A video address was also presented by Ricardo Hausmann, founder and director of Harvard’s Growth Lab International Development Center.
Hausmann underscored the vital role of reducing carbon emissions and advancing renewable energy in the fight against global climate change.
The "Green Growth Portal" is designed to systematize supply chains for "green" technologies and solutions, aiming to maximize the economic benefits of the transition to a green economy.
Tim Cheston, Senior Research Manager at the Center for International Development "Growth Lab," provided participants with further details about the portal's features.
The portal is set to be integrated into Harvard University’s Atlas of Economic Complexity, which includes data from 250 countries and regions, benefiting over 1.7 million users worldwide.
The portal will offer comparative data and analyses based on information gathered from international organizations and countries. Full-scale operations are expected to begin in 2025, with free access for all users.
The presentation event, attended by government officials, representatives of the private sector, international organizations, business associations, academia, and financial institutions, featured an exchange of views and addressed questions from the audience.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
