ASTANA, Kazakhstan, January 28. The government of Kazakhstan faces the task of achieving complete self-sufficiency in electricity, as well as creating reserves at the level of 15-20 percent, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at an extended government meeting today, Trend reports.

"The strategic course of Kazakhstan towards achieving carbon neutrality remains unchanged, but its implementation should be approached more rationally, so we need to effectively utilize our natural resources and inherent advantages.

In the next two years, at least three gigawatts of new capacity must be introduced. This target is nearly 2.5 times higher than previous years," he explained.

President Tokayev also emphasized that innovative coal plants should replace thermal power plants built with outdated technologies.

He pointed out that in China and South Korea, next-generation coal stations with minimal emissions are successfully operating.

"Regrettably, the coal power station in Balkhash was not constructed at that time. Consequently, we forfeited a significant supply of electricity, which is now critically required," the head of state added.
