Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept.16

Trend:

The Czech foreign ministry made a statement in connection with the so-called election to the local self-government bodies held in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani embassy in the Czech Republic told Trend Sept. 16.

The so-called election of local self-government bodies was held in the Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh September 13, 2015, the statement said.

In this context, the Czech foreign ministry does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework of this so-called election, the statement said.

The Czech Republic supports the peaceful settlement of the conflict based on the principles of international law, used by the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve the conflict, the document says.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
