BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 28. President Ilham Aliyev's address at the recent 16th BRICS summit reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to multilateralism in international relations, political analyst Azer Garayev said in an interview with Trend.
Garayev emphasized that the president's speech carries regional importance.
"Azerbaijan, having led the Non-Aligned Movement from 2020 to 2023, reinforced its commitment to this principle and enhanced its standing on the global stage. In his address, President Ilham Aliyev highlighted that the experience gained from successfully chairing the movement is instrumental, as Azerbaijan currently chairs the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia. In this context, Azerbaijan is actively working to forge stronger economic and political connections throughout the region," he noted.
The analyst also noted Azerbaijan's critical role as a transport hub in Eurasia.
"President Ilham Aliyev pointed out that the East-West and North-South transport corridors pass through our territory. All segments of these transportation routes within the territory of Azerbaijan are operating successfully. Thanks to its position and modern infrastructure capabilities, Azerbaijan has become an integral part of these transport corridors, enhancing transit volumes and contributing to the strengthening of global transport routes while attracting new investments," he added.
Discussing the upcoming COP29 international climate conference, Garayev highlighted that hosting this event in Baku further elevates Azerbaijan's international significance.
"As President Ilham Aliyev noted, the unanimous decision of about 200 countries to hold the COP29 in Baku is a sign of respect of the entire world community for Azerbaijan, is a clear testament to the respect and support for our policies. This initiative will solidify Azerbaijan as a key platform for climate cooperation between the Global South and North," he said.
Regarding the meeting between President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Garayev characterized it as another step towards peace.
"During the summit, a bilateral meeting took place where both leaders instructed their foreign ministers to expedite the work on a peace agreement and the establishment of interstate relations. While this meeting demonstrates the commitment of both sides to the peace process, attempts by Armenia to undermine previous agreements raise concerns in Azerbaijan," he added.
