FUZULI, Azerbaijan, October 28. The issue of landmines is among the most serious challenges faced by Azerbaijan, Irish traveler Niall O'Murchadha said during his visit to the Fuzuli district with a delegation from the British Piki Reels Club, Trend reports.
The group of travelers had the opportunity to witness a demining operation firsthand with their visit.
"I have to say, it was a shocking experience. The damage one explosion can cause truly shakes me. Even more distressing is the fact that many mines remain hidden across this territory. It was challenging to discern the true impact of the explosions. I believe this is one of the most serious problems Azerbaijan faces. Most other issues can be resolved; roads and buildings can be gradually restored. But getting rid of all these mines, I fear, will take a long time," O'Murchadha said.
To note, the visit of a 33-member delegation of the British club Piki Reels to Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur started on October 26.
Representatives from prominent international travel clubs made the rounds to Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur a whopping 11 times between 2020 and 2024. Over 400 foreign travelers from upwards of 50 countries jumped on the bandwagon for these visits.
This visit by the British Piki Reels club marks their twelfth time at the well-trodden path. These trips are extremely important to promote the occupied territories within dark tourism and, at the same time, to showcase the extensive construction and restoration works underway.
