BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 28. Intensive implementation of projects to establish drinking and wastewater supply systems in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan is progressing, Trend reports.
The State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan is conducting large-scale work in the field of water management in the Karabakh region. Urgent restoration and construction efforts are underway to ensure sustainable and high-quality drinking water provision for local residents.
The project for constructing external water supply and sewerage systems in Jabrayil district is designed to meet the needs of 15,000 people, with future developments considered up to 2040. In 2023, the district drilled a geological exploration well, confirming that the water source's capacity and quality are sufficient to supply the city and surrounding villages.
A total of nine sub-artesian wells are planned in the northern part of Jabrayil, with work already commenced. Initially, 3 artesian wells will be drilled, and one well with a capacity of 12 liters per second has been put into operation—the control room of Subartesian well No. 6. As the population grows, additional wells will be drilled to meet increasing demand.
In the Jabrayil district, two storage facilities, each with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters, are under construction, according to Oktay Khaziev, Deputy Head of the Karabakh Regional Department of "Sukanal." The first facility has been tested and is now operational. A sewerage system has also been laid for 5,300 meters from the city exit.
The second storage facility's concrete work, insulation efforts, and security room preparation are almost complete. A main pipeline stretching over 1177 meters, with a diameter of 280, has also been completed.
The installation of modern wastewater treatment equipment guarantees a dependable and high-quality drinking water supply for residents relocating to the Jabrayil district.
Since October 2020, as part of the "Great Return" plan, residents in the Zangilan district have received an around-the-clock water supply.
According to Rashad Sadigly, Head of the "Sukanal" section in Zangilan district, two reservoirs with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters each are currently under construction as part of the 2024 state project, ensuring an uninterrupted water supply for the city. Concrete work for these reservoirs is currently ongoing.
In addition, two reservoirs with a capacity of 100 cubic meters each will be built, along with 1 kilometer of storm drains for effective rainwater management. A long-term plan also includes the construction of nine sub-artesian wells and a pumping station.
The construction of a 9-kilometer sewage collection line is nearing completion, with 83 percent of the work finished. So far, 1,352 meters of the main water supply line and 1,143 meters of the inter-artesian water supply line have been completed.
Similar efforts are underway in the Fuzuli district, where 648 families currently reside. Projects are being implemented to provide drinking water to both the population and various public and private facilities.
To ensure a reliable drinking water supply, two reservoirs, each with a capacity of 8,500 cubic meters, and two additional reservoirs, each with a capacity of 2,500 cubic meters, are under construction. Current construction and installation work on the management and security facilities of the reservoirs has been completed, and landscaping efforts are in progress.
Head of the "Sukanal" section in Fuzuli district, Vugar Sarkarli, reported that they pump water from an existing source in the village of Govshad into a temporary reservoir with a capacity of 100 cubic meters and then supply it to Fuzuli. He confirmed that the city enjoys a steady supply of drinking water 24 hours a day.
Work is also nearing completion on the warehouses under construction, with capacities of 17,000 cubic meters and 2,500 cubic meters, respectively.
The project includes the construction of 10,330 meters of main water supply line, 5,807 meters of artesian and inter-clean water supply line in Fuzuli, the installation of a wastewater treatment facility, and the laying of 1,816 meters of sewer collector. Excavation of 15 sub-artesian wells has also been completed.
Resident Sahib Novruzov expressed satisfaction, noting that residents enjoy uninterrupted water supply and there are no complaints regarding water access and use.
Looking ahead, it can be confidently stated that residents of Fuzuli will not face any water supply issues, with every resident ensuring access to drinking water.
The Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency remains committed to the continuous restoration of the drinking water supply in Karabakh and other liberated territories.
