Kazakhstan is hitting the ground running in energy production, especially with gas turbine power plants lighting the way. A recent state audit took a long, hard look at the effectiveness of national energy policies and uncovered a silver lining with a growing contribution from hydropower and renewable sources. However, the audit also uncovered a mixed bag of regional disparities in energy generation and consumption, with most of the eggs in the basket up north and the lion's share of demand down south. Thermal power plants are still the bread and butter of electricity generation, and only a handful of regions are truly pulling their own weight.
