BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 28. COP29 should ensure the achievement of ambitious results on climate finance, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, said in a statement on the 2024 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Synthesis Report, Trend reports.

He believes that today's NDC Synthesis Report should serve as a pivotal moment, concluding the era of inadequacy and initiating a new era of acceleration.

“This comes against the backdrop that much more ambitious national climate plans are due to be presented by all countries next year. On the other hand, if implemented effectively, much bolder new national climate plans have the potential to not only prevent climate chaos but also bring about transformation and prosperity in every nation, according to the statement.

Stiell noted that bolder new climate plans are vital to drive stronger investment, economic growth and opportunity, more jobs, less pollution, better health and lower costs, and more secure and affordable clean energy, among many other benefits.

“As expected, with countries currently working to put together new NDCs due next year, this year’s report shows only fractional progress compared to what is expected – and urgently needed – next year. The next round of national climate plans should provide a significant expansion of climate action and the ambition of the respective targets,” the executive secretary added.

He noted that UN Climate Change will host a series of events next year to support the country's delivery of NDCs and engage the global public in the conversation about their delivery. These new national climate plans will be among the most important policy documents so far this century.

“COP29 is a vital moment in the world’s climate fight, and today’s data is a blunt reminder of why COP29 must stand and deliver. Governments must come to Baku ready to convert the pledges in the UAE Consensus at COP28 – tripling renewables, the global goal on adaptation, transitioning away from all fossil fuels – into real-world, real-economy results, protecting people and their livelihoods everywhere. COP29 must be an enabling COP, delivering concrete and ambitious outcomes on climate finance that take account of developing country needs, recognizing that such support is core business to protect every nation and the global economy from rampaging climate impacts.,” Stiell added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
