Fate of Eight Seamen of Sunk Vessel ‘Nakhchivan’ in   Cherhenski  Strait Remains Unknown

Ukraine, Kiev /corr. Trend Z.Novosotiviski / The fate of eight seamen of the vessel 'Nakhchivan' which sank during a storm in the Cherhenski Strait still remains unknown. "The fate of eight out of the 11 members of the crew who escaped the vessel still remains unknown. The search continues," a source reported to Trend from the Press Service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations on 12 November.

The dry cargo ship 'Nakhchivan' sank in the Cherhenski Strait near the Caucasus Port as a result of storm. Although the vessel was named after the Azerbaijani region, it does not belong to an Azerbaijani company. A source stated at the Baku office of the Palmali group of companies which carries out marine transportations that the company has a vessel named 'Nakhchivan', but it works in other directions. In addition, the vessel does not belong to the Azerbaijani State Caspian Shipping Company. The vessel that sank was a Russian vessel and was transporting cargo from Kazakhstan.

The two rescued seamen and the female cook were taken to Cherhenski city hospital, a source stated from the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The doctors said that due to the timely actions of the rescuers, it was possible to avoid complications and there are now no threats to the injured.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday and during the day, six Russian vessels were damaged by storms. On Sunday, two vessels, 'Volnogorsk' and 'Nakhchivan' sank and the tanker 'Volga-Neft- 139' broke up. In addition, two more vessels were cast ashore near Novorossiysk. Moreover, the vessel 'Kovel' sank in the Cherhenski Strait. A source stated from the Press Service of the Crimea department at the Ministry of Emergency Situations that the Ukrainian vessel 'Vera Volshina' with 18 crew members was cast ashore in Caspel bight. The vessel with agricultural equipment was sailing from Romania to Novorossiysk. Employees of the Crimea department at the Ministry of Emergency Situations evacuated the crew from the vessel.

The storm caused significant damage to the infrastructure of Sevastopol. Many residents of Crimea lost power, Crimea Energy, the gas service is repairing the damage.
