Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Dashgin Gulmammadov, the Head of the Election Office of Azerbaijani, Fazil Aliyev, who is a candidate for the presidency in Georgia, was arrested and charged with insulting human dignity, Aliyev reported to Trend on 30 November.

Gulmammadov has been imprisoned in the isolation cell of the National Independent Ministry of Georgia. According to him, Gulmammadov is accused of making insulting remarks on the internet. However, Aliyev considers that the accusations are false and groundless. "The arrest is aimed at preventing my election campaign and they have achieved this. The Government has practically destroyed my election campaign," Aliyev said.

Aliyev said that he held negotiations with law enforcement officials of Georgia, in which they reported that the accusations brought against Gulmammadov have not been proved as yet. Therefore, Gulmammadov may be released.

Aliyev's candidature was registered to take part at the upcoming presidential elections in Georgia on 5 January 2008. In an attempt to hinder his pre-election campaign, the Georgian Government arrested Aliyev.

Aliyev added that he would meet with Gulmammadov in the isolation cell, as well as with officials of the Ministry. Aliyev will make a decision concerning the future implementation of the pre-election campaign after the meeting in the prison.

"We are panning to stage a protest if Gulmammadov is not released in the near future," Aliyev said.
