Two Azerbaijani Presidential Contenders Withdraw their Candidatures

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 September / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / Two Azerbaijani presidential candidates withdrew their candidatures.

"Teymur Guliyev, the advisor of Madaniyyet (Culture) newspaper and Fikrat Ahadov, editor of the scientific and methodological department of the magazine of the Azerbaijani Education Ministry withdrew their candidatures for the presidential post," Natig Mammadov, the secretary of the Central Elections Commission (CEC) told journalists on 4 September.

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October. The CEC officially registered candidatures of the current President Ilham Aliyev, the chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) and Igbal Agazade, the chairman of the opposition Umid party.

According to Mammadov, Guliyev explained withdrawal of his candidature with the current situation in South Caucasus and Ahmadov said that he could not gather required 40 signatures to register his candidature.

The CEC decided to annul candidatures of Guliyev and Ahmadov after examining their apply.
