BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 26. Baku International Sea Trade Port (BISTP) plans to reduce emissions to zero within 15–20 years, the port's executive director Eugene Seah said to Euronews, Trend reports.
“We recently completed a carbon footprint measurement, which validated our hypothesis that ships account for almost 60 percent of total CO2 emissions. There are also emissions from vehicles and equipment in the port area. This research will help develop a comprehensive approach to reducing emissions. Perhaps in around 15-20 years, we will reach net zero, or zero emissions,” Eugene Seah said.
According to him, BISTP wants to become an example for other regional ports in implementing green procedures and work processes to reduce carbon emissions.
BISTP is implementing wastewater treatment measures as steps to protect the environment.
“Our wastewater treatment system comprises five modules utilizing rotating biological contactor (RBC) technology. Each module is capable of treating 500 cubic meters of wastewater per day,” Eugene Seah said.
To note, BISTP is the only green port in the Caspian Sea, having received the relevant documents from UN specialized structures.
