DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, May 6. The implementation of the Accelerating the Transition to Electric Mobility in Public Transport in the Asia-Pacific Region, Phase II project, has commenced in Tajikistan with the support of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Trend reports.
Tajikistan's Ministry of Transport anticipates the introduction of test networks of electric buses upon the project's completion.
In order to finance the transition to public electric transport and attract foreign investment, Tajikistan will develop a regional roadmap as part of this initiative.
Furthermore, between 2024 and 2026, responsible entities within the project's framework will undertake various measures, including organizing national-level meetings, coordinating electrification mechanisms, conducting technical needs assessments, and developing recommendations for financing public transport movements and electric vehicle development.
ESCAP reports that a joint analysis by the commission's secretariat and the multilateral development banks, focusing on specific subregions such as South and Southwest Asia, North and Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, indicates significant potential for decarbonizing freight transport in the region by 2050.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is one of the five regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Established in 1947, ESCAP currently consists of 53 members and nine associate members, covering over 60 per cent of the world's population, or 4.1 billion people.
