Belarus frankly wants to establish good relations with EU: president

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that Belarus and the EU have a basis to build good relations and promises the sincerity by Minsk in the process.

"We have the basis on which we can build our relations. We sincerely want, even if someone does not like this, to establish good relations," President of Belarus said at a meeting with European Union Commissioner for Foreign Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero Waldner in Minsk on June 22, RIA Novosti reported.

Meanwhile, he noted that the EU representative would not regret that he had visited Belarus.

"I would have asked you to have a totally honest and frank conversation. I know you have recently been trying to persuade by individual politicians that Lukashenko plays a sort of game with the European Union and he is not going to change anything in the country and in relations with the EU," Lukashenko said.

"Sorry for the indiscretion, but I have never behaved dishonestly. Maybe, I am not like a diplomat in a white shirt, but I think that the policy must be sincere," he said.

Lukashenko expressed his willingness to answer honestly, even to "inconvenient" questions.

"We want the European Union understands that Belarus is not only the geographical center of the continent, that decent and honest people live in Belarus which is a sovereign and independent state," said Lukashenko.

"This is a great property of any nation, and infringe on the sovereignty and independence, as if someone does not like, we cannot afford," - said Lukashenko.
