FM: Russia’s joining WTO without Georgia's consent is only theoretical
Georgia, Tbilisi, March 14 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /
There is only a theoretical chance of Russia's joining the WTO without Georgia's consent, Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said on Monday.
She commented on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's statement that Russia will be able to enter the WTO without Georgia's consent.
Kalandadze said the organization's charter provides for decisions by consensus, but the statute provides for exceptions, where any decision can be made through bypass a country.
"But, one must say that the organization had no precedent, and if such exclusion would be allowed, then it will surprise me," she said.
Regarding the resumption of dialogue in connection with Russia's accession to the WTO, Kalandadze said the Georgian side is constructive in these negotiations.
"It is still too early to talks about the outcome of negotiations, because the parties have a convergence of views at this stage," she said.
