The Chief Executive of Ismayilli, Nizami Alekperov held a meeting with the public on Friday which brought together Azerbaijani public and political figures. The meeting discussed the region's recent civil disturbance.

The executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Ali Ahmedov, deputy executive secretary of the party Mubariz Gurbanli, MP Novruz Aslan, head of the Public Security Department under the Interior Ministry, major general Javanshir Mammadov took part in the meeting.

Alekperov stressed that the recent events in Ismayilli are undesirable. Alekperov urged people to show restraint.

Javanshir Mammadov, head of the Interior Ministry spoke about the events and noted that a criminal case was initiated in connection with the January 23 incident and that an investigation is in process.

An incident occurred in Ismayilli at 21:30. As a result, the Chirag hotel and four different passenger cars were burnt.

The incident occurred when hotel worker and Baku resident Emil Shamseddinov was drunk driving on Nizami Street and crashed his car into a utility pole. Shamseddinov, together with his passenger, Baku resident Elmeddin Mammadov assaulted the owner of VAZ-2107 car, Ismayilli resident Ramil Bekirov.

A large crowd gathered at the scene which is generally busy and started to angrily heckle the driver. After Shamsaddinov further insulted local residents, the conflict took a turn for the worst, resulting in the hotel being set on fire and three cars parked there being burned.

The accused then attempted to set fire to the house of the son of the Chief Executive of the region, Elkhan Nizami Alekperov with the intention of destroying it.

Despite police intervention and their successful prevention of further chaos, a car in the yard was set on fire.

During the incident, four people, including three police officers were injured. Shamsaddinov and Mammadov were detained.

A group of leaders and other senior officials from the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office arrived at the scene.

A criminal case has been filed under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan in the Investigation Department on the Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office. An investigation is underway.
