BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 25. The development of tourism in Turkmenistan creates opportunities for investment in related industries, a source in the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) told Trend.

The organization noted that the development of tourism creates opportunities for investment in related sectors such as transportation logistics, entertainment, gastronomy, and more, attracting private sector involvement, including foreign investment, to the economy of Turkmenistan.

"The tourism sector has the potential to drive national economies and significantly benefit local communities. Sustainable and resilient tourism development can lead to increased incomes for locals, thereby supporting both local and national economies. Strong tourism industries are often associated with efforts to preserve local cultures, historical and natural heritage, and promote national identity, all of which contribute to ongoing economic growth," the source said.

According to the organization, during high-level meetings and negotiations, both Turkmen authorities and UNWTO have identified education, investments, and MICE Tourism as top priorities for cooperation.

"These strategic directions aim to enhance inclusiveness, empower local communities, and promote efficient resource management in Turkmenistan's tourism sector, aligning with broader sustainable development objectives," the source added.

Furthermore, the representative of the organization stressed that the key focus will be on fostering an innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to unlock the sector's potential for economic growth and job creation.

"The Turkmenistan government reaffirms its commitment to hosting international events to showcase the country's rich culture, traditions, and customs, thereby promoting its national tourism brand to the global community," the source said.

Meanwhile, at the end of March this year, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili in Ashgabat.

The President stated that Turkmenistan aspires to expand sustainable tourism, whose objectives align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in order to achieve socioeconomic progress and environmental well-being.
