BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. New reservoirs will be built in Lachin and Gubadli, Azerbaijan, Trend reports.

Plans are underway to construct reservoirs in Lachin and Gubadli, as outlined in the “National Strategy for the Rational Use of Water Resources” approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

The report highlights the continuous improvement of water infrastructure in Azerbaijan. Key developments include the construction of the Takhtakorpu, Shamkirchay, Tovuzchay, Khudaferin, and Giz Galasy reservoirs, as well as the installation of the Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline. Alongside various construction and reconstruction projects for drinking water supply and wastewater management in district and city centers, as well as rural areas, we have also completed the Jeyranbatan Ultrafiltration Water Treatment Plant Complex.

As a result of these initiatives, the supply of drinking water to the population has increased to 67 percent, and the cultivated area has expanded to 1.5 million hectares. The Sugovushan, Khachynchay, and Zabukhchay reservoirs, along with the Kyondelenchay complex of three reservoirs, have undergone restoration and construction work in the territories liberated from occupation. The construction of the Engidzhe reservoir has commenced in the Gabala region, while the Alijanchay reservoir project has begun in the Oguz and Sheki regions.

Additionally, the construction of six reservoirs, including the Khakarichay (Lachin) and Bargushadchay (Gubadli) reservoirs, is underway to create reservoirs that suit the local relief and accumulate water from mountain rivers.

The Shirvan and Karabakh irrigation canals, which originate from the Mingachevir reservoir, are undergoing reconstruction. Efforts are also underway to renovate 20 irrigation canals, one hydroelectric complex, and one collector. In light of limited water supplies and increasing demand, the implementation of cost-effective water supply technologies across all industries is being expanded, along with the treatment and reuse of wastewater. Moreover, the country is piloting a project to produce drinking water through seawater desalination.
