BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Azerbaijan aims to increase drinking water availability to 85 percent, Trend reports.

This target is part of the “National Strategy for the Efficient Use of Water Resources,” recently approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

The strategy outlines improvements to the national water metering system and measures to prevent unauthorized usage. Additionally, modern irrigation methods will be expanded to cover 10 percent of the country by 2027, and four new reservoirs will be built to increase fresh water reserves.

The strategy also aims to enhance water supply infrastructure, reaching 85 percent in drinking water availability and 90 percent in irrigation water supply. Alternative water sources will be promoted, water accounting will reach full coverage, and drinking water losses will be reduced to 33 percent, with irrigation water losses cut to 42 percent.
