BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Azerbaijan intends to construct 28 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur regions, Trend reports.

This initiative is part of the “National Strategy for the Efficient Use of Water Resources,” approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

The strategy outlines measures to make the most of water and hydropower in these economic regions by rolling out "smart water supply" systems. As part of the grand scheme, 28 HPPs will be built, the surface water hydroelectric potential will be evaluated, and a compact power plant will be rolled out to back these hydroelectric setups. The strategy also keeps an eye out for golden opportunities in health, coastal, and water tourism.

Moreover, these upgrades will quench the thirst for drinking water, lend a helping hand to agriculture's irrigation demands, and pave the way for smart water usage through interbasin transfers. This development will open the floodgates for irrigation water to over 300,000 hectares of land in these regions, giving agricultural productivity and sustainability a leg up.
