BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 10. COP29 should transform claims and commitments into results, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Jane Mohammed said during the preliminary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - Pre-COP29 in Baku, Trend reports.

She emphasized the critical need to mitigate any additional temperature escalation.

“Further temperature rise could lead to disasters. We must close the financial gap by raising the voices of developing countries and international financial institutions.

COP29 must translate claims and commitments into results. Every member country of the Paris Agreement must take adaptation measures. I have observed that all parties are aiming to reach a shared understanding that will enable us to accomplish our objectives. Now is the time to implement this agreement. Baku will contribute to resolving these issues. We think that COP29 will show concrete results. The UN is ready to support this process,” she added.

The preliminary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), i.e., PreCOP29, which precedes the climate summit itself, has started its work in Baku.

The theme of PreCOP29 in Baku is "Raising Ambition and Ensuring Action."

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku will become the center of the world and will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
