The issue of political prisoners in Azerbaijan was closed and intensive work should be done for the resolution of the problem, MP Gulamhusseyn Alibayli, an Azerbaijani parliamentary representative to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) from the oppositional Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party (APFP).
Touching upon the summer session of the PACE, Alibayli noted that
though essential changes were included in a draft resolution on the report �On
situation political prisoners in Azerbaijan’ by British MP Malcolm Bruce, the fact of unsettlement of the issue was exactly indicated in the final resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly.
MP from the opposition noted that the people included in the list of political prisoners are still kept in the prisons. The same time it is necessary hold reforms within the legal system of Azerbaijan to rule out possible rise of a problem of political prisoners.
I the conclusion Alibayli spoke on the opportunities for rehabilitation of the elections right of former prisoners. MP reminded of people convicted for the participation in the October public mass disorder in 2003, were allowed to nominate their candidacies in the forthcoming parliamentary elections to be held in November 2005.
В"I hope the identical decisions will be made in regard to rest members of the opposition,В" he underlined, noting that any limitations on rights for balloting in not right. В"The citizens, with previous convictions, should have rights to rehabilitate their elections rights any time desired, Alibayli underscored.
