AZERBAIJAN TAKES LAST PLACE IN EUROPE IN NUMBER OF LAWYERS AND JUDGES

Azerbaijan takes the last place in Europe in the number of lawyers and judges, the Azerbaijan’s Justice Minister (JM) Fikret Mamedov stated at the news conference in Baku on 3 August, Trend reports.

The minister noted, 4946 legal entities have been registered in the country in 2005 on the whole, 40% of which fall at regions. The figure exceeds the 2004 indicator by 46%.

Meanwhile, the JM noted, 420 mass media were registered in Azerbaijan in 2004, and the indicator reached 244 in the first half of the current year.

Having underlined positive results in the staff changes in the penitentiary system, Mamedov pointed out at the availability of shortcomings in the country’s judicial system functioning. В"Some judges misuse their powers and pronounce unjust judgements”, the Minister noted.

The Minister has also touched upon the issue of the electing judges, having noted, “despite the term of powers for judges expires in September, they will function untill the new judges are elected”, Mamedov said.
