PACE Political Committee Discusses Situation in Azerbaijan

MP Samad Seyidov, the Head of the Azerbaijani Delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), informed Trend that Baku will host a meeting of the PACE Political Committee to be held in Baku on 11-12 December 2006 which will focus on an issue concerning Azerbaijan.

The gathering will bring together approximately 60 MPs and 20 experts of the CE. The agenda of the meeting includes membership of Montenegro at the CE, the situation in Kosovo, Iran's nuclear program, democracy and human rights in the CE member-states, and the state in Chechnya. Another important issue to be considered at the event will be the use of oil as a mean of pressure on Europe, MP Seyidov stressed.

On the second day, the discussions will focus on Central Asia with the participation of experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

It is also planned to carry out hearings within the framework of Europe-Azerbaijan-Central Asia relationships and democracy. Members of the Political Committee, as well as officials of Azerbaijan will state their opinion on the issue. The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister and seniors state officials will be in attendance.
