Azerbaijani Football Clubs Study AFFA’s Proposal of Renaming Clubs

Azerbaijan, Baku, 25 April / corr. Trend R. Ergun/ Several football clubs of Azerbaijan, taking part in the football Premier League, are protesting against proposal to change their names, said the representatives of clubs whose names were proposed to be changed.

Rovnag Abdulalyev, the President of AFFA proposed to change the name of club Baku into Lokomotiv-Baku, that of Olimpik into Shuvalan, Inter into Inter-Keshle and Standard into Bayil-Standard, in order to solve the problem of fans.

Zeynal Mammadov, the chief manager of Baku club said to Trend on 25 April that the club will not accept proposal by AFFA president on renaming the clubs.

"There is no need to rename Baku. If our club's name were Inter or Olimpik, we would have changed it," Mammadov said.

The club Baku earlier took part in Azerbaijani championship with name of Dinamo.

Eldaniz Yusifov, the spokesman of Olimpik said that the renaming of club will be discussed at the beginning of summer. "The AFFA President proposed to rename the club not in spring but in the upcoming championship. New stadium of Olimpik is being built in Shuvalan. The club will discuss renaming of its name at the early summer and will notify its decision," Yusifov said.

Olimpik took part in the supreme championship of Azerbaijan with name of AMMK. 

Razzag Babayev, the vice-president of Standard said that the renaming of the club will be discussed after the completion of Premier League. "The management has not yet discussed it. We will divulge our decision on renaming of the club after the championship is complete," Babayev said.

Standard took part in Azerbaijani championship with the name of Arsenal and Inter - with Khazar Universiteti.
