New Chairman of World Azerbaijanis Congress Elected

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Gulamrza Tabrizi, from South Azerbaijan (North Iran) by birth, was elected the new chairman of the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) during the 9th session of the WAC in Cologne, Germany on 8-9 July.

The Charter of the Congress was adopted alongside with injected changes and supplements. The Organization Council's powers were transferred to the administration. There was a decision to abolish the council. Seventeen members were elected to the administration.

Elections for the post of WAC chairman were held on the second day of the session. Javad Derekhti, the former chairman of WAC, did not nominate his candidacy for the post. The fight for the post was between Gulamrza Tabrizi and Agri Garadagli. Tabrizi won by a majority.

Issues concerning South Azerbaijan were discussed at the session too.

Attending the session were leaders of Azerbaijani political parties, representatives of intelligence, as well as Nazim Ibrahimov, the chairman of the State Committee on Work with Azerbaijanis Residing Abroad.

The WAC was founded in the United States in 1997. The organization fights for South Azerbaijani independence.
