Georgian parliament expands Control Chambers’ power

Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 24 / Trend , N.Kirtskhalia Georgian parliament passed a Law on Control Chamber. The law expanded power of the office. Under the law, the Chamber will be involved in development of the state budget of Georgia, the budgets of autonomous republics and government units, and also will check spending of funds. Chamber will audit all companies in which the state share exceeds 50 percent. The Chamber of Control is also empowered to receive identified information on individual taxpayers. In accordance with the law, the Chamber is barred from interfering in the activities of private entrepreneurs. "A private law subject spending state funds shall not be directly controlled by the Chamber. The situation with spending of state funds by a subject shall be studied on the basis of documents obtained from the relevant governmental structures," says the law. As to controlling of opposition's financial and economic activities by the Chamber, the parliamentary factions have the right to request an extraordinary audit. The law provides for formation of a litigation review council which will enable transparency of the Chamber's activities. If the Chamber reveals violations, it is authorized to address the Parliament with a proposal to suspend spending of budget funds by country's government.
