BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 11

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Georgia's dairy consumer price index, which reflects changes in the cost of the consumer basket, is at a record high, Trend reports citing Georgiandairy.org, an information and analytical resource for the livestock sector in Georgia.

According to the data, the increase in nominal prices for dairy products in March was the highest both in comparison with the previous month and in comparison with the same period in 2019.

In nominal terms, the index in March 2020 increased by 2 percent compared to the previous month and by 11 percent compared to the same period last year. In real terms, excluding inflation, this change include an increase of 1 percent and an increase of 5 percent, respectively.

No special changes were observed for products. Compared with March 2019, in March 2020 prices for industrial milk, butter, yogurt and ice cream increased by 5-10 percent.

In March 2020, the average price of imported milk powder per 100 kg was $286, which is the highest price in the last 4 years. In March 2020, prices for reconstituted milk increased by 14 lari ($4.42) per 100 liters compared to February 2020.

In the reporting period, prices for cottage cheese, sour cream, condensed milk increased by 10-15 percent.

Cheese is still the most expensive product in Georgia. The price of Sulguni cheese in March rose by 17 percent, the price of Imereti cheese by 29 percent.

In the current crisis period, both demand and supply have a great influence on strengthening prices for dairy products. Domestic consumption has increased, the product that was intended for the agricultural market is consumed by the household.
