Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / The number of new electronic exchanges on Baku telephone lines will exceed 90% by the end of 2007, said Ahmad Mehtiyev, the technical director of Baktelecom. Today the figure stands at 88%.

According to Mehtiyev, reconstruction of old automatic telephone exchanges, (ATE) 471/472/473, 474/475/476 and 423, by Nехt Generation Network (NGN) will enable an increase in shares of electronic communications. The capacity of stations currently makes up 90,000, but after revamping, it is expected to reach 125,000.

The establishment of housing lines takes more time than the installment of new equipment in ATE.

Mehtiyev said that it was planning to put into commission a new NGN-station by the end of the year. However, reconstruction of Baktelecom was planned for the first quarter of 2008, according to the Electron Azerbaijan program.

Currently, approximately 80% of telephones in Baku have been electronically modernized.
