Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 27 / Trend H.Valiyev /

Azerbaijan will be able to use the GLONASS system after developing its space industry, National Aerospace Agency First Deputy General Director Ilyas Suleymanov told Trend .

According to Suleymanov, the mechanism for using Russia's navigation system is undefined at the moment, but finding opportunities to apply GLONASS is a priority for Azerbaijan.

The national satellite Azercpace should be created and launched to implement the system.

The Transport Ministry is presently reviewing the introduction of such navigation systems. The project's main objective is to apply a satellite system in Azerbaijan to monitor traffic. However, it is necessary to create an exact electronic thematic map of the country and produce telematic modules to realize the project based on space-based information.

Azerbaijan is considering the possibility of cooperating with Russia using the GLONASS space navigation system, Russian Vice Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov said at a recent State Export Control Commission.

He added that international space cooperation is actively carried out with CIS countries.

"The format of our interaction should be defined not only through political considerations, but also benefits of an economic nature, which can be achieved only if there is a full-fledged legal treaty base providing reliable protection and preserving national missile and space technologies," Ivanov said.
