Azerbaijan's cabinet of ministers carries out coordinated work to introduce biometric passports

The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan carried out coordinated work on the introduction of biometric passports in the country, said the director of the Institute of Information Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Rasim Aliguliyev.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan carried out coordinated work on the introduction of biometric passports in the country, said the director of the Institute of Information Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Rasim Aliguliyev.

According to Aliguliyev, now the main priorities in the implementation of the project are the technical equipment of customs checkpoints.

"Today, the law-enforcement agencies of Azerbaijan have prepared a number of bills, some of which have now been adopted. Work is carried out by the Interior Ministry, Ministry of Justice and other departments for the integration of other bills to the existing environment," said the director of the Institute.

Aliguliyev said formerly that the citizens of Azerbaijan will receive electronic passports containing biometric information about their owners in 2011.

According to Aliguliyev, fingerprints and biometric data on the structure of the human face will be posted in new type of passports meeting the international standards.

Passports with biometric data will be applied to ensure the safety of the international civil air navigation, strengthen the security of identity documents against possible counterfeiting, improve mechanisms for rapid and accurate identification when crossing the state border and improve quality and efficiency of international air travel.
