Iran reveals date of possible commission of railway to Afghanistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 2

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

The railway between Khaf district of Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province and Afghanistan’s Herat province may be commissioned by the end of this Iranian year (March 21, 2020), said Abbas Khatibi, deputy head of Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company (CDTIC), Trend reports via ISNA.

Khatibi noted that the Khaf-Herat railway includes one domestic and one foreign project, adding that the length of the domestic project is about 77 kilometers and the length of the foreign project is about 62 kilometers.

“The work regarding the domestic project is almost complete,” the deputy head said.

Khatibi noted that the company laying the Khaf-Herat railway provided the funds needed for this project in the form of financial aid to Afghanistan in 2003-2004. Thus, the construction work before the railway’s commissioning had to be completed by both countries at the same time, the deputy head added.

However, Afghanistan had problems with ensuring investments, and that’s why the country was unable to implement the railway’s construction, Khatibi said.

“Of course, this year the Afghan side has held discussions with a number of foreign investors and promised to Iran that the project will be completed within the next 1.5 years if the talks give result,” the deputy head noted.
