Egypt affirmed on Saturday its commitment to protecting foreign embassies after protestors broke into the building of the Israeli embassy in Cairo late Friday night, Xinhua reported.

Egypt's Minister of Information Osama Hikal said in a televised speech that "deterrent actions," including the application of the provisions of the emergency law which has not been lifted, will be adopted to deal with current situation in the country.

He said some people took advantage of the restraint of the security forces and attempted to incite confrontations.

Those rioters will be referred to the higher state security court in accordance with emergency law, he added.

Three died and 1,049 were injured during the protests and clashes near the Israeli embassy and Giza security directorate, west of Cairo, the health ministry announced on Saturday.

An Israeli plane took the Israeli ambassador and most of embassy staff back home early Saturday.

On Saturday, Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, his cabinet crisis-management team and members of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces held a meeting to discuss the incident.

Military police have arrested 19 participants in the attack on the Israeli embassy, official MENA news agency said.
