Riyadh intensifies clampdown on east

Saudi Arabian security forces have intensified the crackdown on opposition demonstrations in the Eastern Province, Press TV reports.

The demonstrators in the east of the country are calling for political and social reforms as well as the release of political prisoners.

On Tuesday, a Saudi court sentenced 17 activists and lawyers to prison sentences of up to 30 years for "sedition and other offences."

Most of them have been in prison since 2007, when they were arrested after they allegedly met in the city of Jeddah to discuss political change in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Saudi security forces killed three people in the Eastern Province city of Qatif on Sunday and Monday and have injured and arrested dozens of people over the past few days.

24-year-old Ali al-Felfel and a nine-year-old girl were shot dead in a demonstration in Qatif during the late hours of Monday. Saudi forces also killed 19-year-old Nasser al-Mahishi in Qatif on Sunday night.

Saudis in Qatif and the nearby town of Awamiyah held demonstrations against the House of Saud on Monday, despite the security forces' crackdown on the protesters.

The security forces opened fire on the demonstrators in Qatif, but the people fought back and seized one of the army's armored vehicles.

Later on, regime forces used artillery and heavy machine guns to disperse the protesters.

Last week, Saudi security forces in Qatif arrested two people who were accused of taking part in demonstrations demanding reform and the release of political prisoners.

The Saudi authorities have prohibited public gatherings in the wake of months of anti-regime protests in several towns.
