New bridge collapses in Kashmir

Three workers are dead and 20 are missing after a bridge being built in Indian-administered Kashmir crashed into the gorge below, police say, BBC reported.

Work on the road bridge outside the town of Uri, 100km ( 62 miles) west of the regional capital Srinagar, appeared to be nearly complete when it fell.

Part of the bridge looks to be intact, jutting out high above the fast-flowing River Jehlum.

Police said the cause of the disaster had still to be established.

A search was under way on Sunday for possible survivors and Indian police asked the army in neighbouring Pakistan to check if any workers had been swept downstream.

Building accidents are common in India where safety measures are poorly enforced and shoddy materials are often used, correspondents say.
