Throwing shoes at US President "expresses rage" of Muslims, Spanish foreign minister says
The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at outgoing US President George W Bush at a recent press conference expressed the "rage" of the Muslim world towards the US administration, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said Tuesday.
The behaviour of the journalist was not "dignified," but the support he received reflected the feelings of Arabs and Muslims, Moratinos, a former European Union special envoy to the Middle East, told the television station Telecinco.
Moratinos linked those feelings with the 2002 invasion of Iraq which "began badly" at a time when the West should have focused its efforts on Afghanistan.
"A new enemy, a new strategy were created," encouraging an anti- Western sentiment which "is not good for the world," Moratinos concluded.
