A French soldier was killed on Monday in combat in northern Mali, the president's office said, DPA reported.
It was the sixth casualty since France launched a military operation in January to stop Islamist rebels from advancing toward the capital Bamako from their northern strongholds.
France, which has some 4,000 soldiers in Mali, wants to cut that number to 2,000 by mid-July.
